Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what players ask most, with a tip here and there.

How do I learn to play?

Play the practice case. It shows you step by step where to look and what to do, on the same screen you then play on yourself. In short: everyone stands on a square of their own, two people never share a row or a column, and whoever was alone with the victim in a room did it.

What is the case of the day?

One new case every day, the same for everyone. From 6 October it is easy or medium, with 4 to 7 people. You get 10 points plus 2 for every person above four, times the level, so a medium case counts for more than an easy one. Cases from earlier days are still there to play, they just do not count towards your streak.

How does the week score work?

A new week starts every Monday. The case of the day brings the most points, solving it without hints adds 5, and the fastest ten of the day get a bonus. Other cases are worth 3 points, and solving all seven cases of the day is 15 extra. Share a case and when other people solve it, you get a few week points too: 1 point per different player per case, at most 10 a week.

What is a streak?

Your streak is the number of days in a row you have solved the case of the day. One missed day need not end it: every 7 days solved earns you a freeze (you hold 2 at most), and a freeze covers a missed day by itself.

What do the pencil and the crosses do?

Not sure where someone stood? Turn the pencil on or hold a square down to make a note with the first letter of whoever you have chosen. That way you keep track of the options without really placing anyone. Once someone is placed, the game crosses off their row and column, because nobody else can stand there. Rather do without that help? Turn off Cross off for me.

How do hints work?

Stuck? A hint gets you going again. A nudge points at the next step and explains why. "Where can ... still be?" greys out every square someone can no longer be on. Every hint adds time to your clock, the button shows how much, and that time counts on the leaderboard too. Tip: start with the card that fits the fewest squares.

How do I get on the leaderboard?

Sign in and solve the case of the day. Your time then appears on the daily leaderboard and your points count towards the week. You appear with your avatar and a board name you choose yourself, so not with your real name unless you want to. Players under 13 are shown without a face.

Can I make my own case?

Yes. In the maker you put your own people in your own rooms, and the game turns that into a case that works. Everyone gets an avatar you put together yourself: hair, eyes, glasses, clothes. You share the case with a link or print it.

Which badges can I earn?

You earn badges for what you do, like a run of days or your first case of your own. There are badges for avatars too: one for making your own avatar, and badges for 5, 10 and 25 avatars of friends.

Can I have an avatar made from a photo?

Coming soon. You will be able to have an avatar made from a photo. It will be a one-time payment, or cheaper or free with Premium. It is not possible yet.

What are clubs and live rounds?

In a club, friends or family play the same cases and see who was fastest. All you need is a nickname, no account. A live round is for a class or a group: whoever runs it puts a case on the big screen, everyone plays on their own phone, and the screen shows who is furthest along.

What is the puzzle book?

A book full of cases with your own people in them, from easy to hard, to print. Every case has a QR code, so you can open it on a screen too.

Do I need an account, and what do you keep?

No. You can play and make cases without an account, and then everything stays in your own browser or on your phone. With an account we keep your name, your email address and your solved cases, so you can carry on on another device and join the leaderboard. You delete your account yourself, whenever you like, and everything goes at once. There is more in the privacy statement.
